As an acupuncture insurance billing company we know many acupuncture providers are interested in providing services to military veterans. However, it seems most providers are not familiar with the process for enrolling with the VA.
Acupuncture therapy has been shown to be effective in treating veteran's symptoms resulting from a wide range of conditions. The VA considers acupuncture effective for veterans who suffer from:
- Pain associated with an injury or illness
- Nausea and vomiting after an operation
- Nausea and vomiting related to chemotherapy
- Knee pain from osteoarthritis
- Low back pain
- Depression or other mental health concerns
- Substance dependency

Step 1
To treat military veterans you will want to enroll as a Non-VA Community Provider with your local VA. This is the link to find the nearest VA facility in your area: VA Lookup
Step 2
You'll then want to reach out to the VA's Non-VA Care Office – speak to their vendor point of contact and submit your information to be listed as a provider. Please note: persistence pays off in this instance!
Step 3
Once you are enrolled, they will include your name in a list given to veterans when they seek health care. Before the patient's 1st visit you'll want to make sure that the patient has referral for treatment.
Step 4
After you treat the patient, submit your insurance claim and medical records for acupuncture treatments – no different than you would bill any other insurance for acupuncture. A typical VA claim will pay in 30-45 days.
