According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the percentage of doctors who have switched to electronic health records (EHRs) has increased to 72%, climbing steadily in recent years.
Federal incentive payments authorized in 2009 for meaningful use of EHRs have shown to help spur the adoption. Before incentives the adoption percentage was just 48%.
The amount of physicians who have gone on to add additional computerized capabilities to their practice has also seen an increase throughout the years since the passage of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act, which included the incentive payments.
Farzad Mostashari, who leads the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) stated, “Patients are the primary beneficiaries as more and more doctors adopt the use of electronic tools like EHRs.” Mostashari feels the increase of physicians using EHRs is “encouraging.”
Although some physicians are still reluctant to that the plunge into the health IT world, the growth made in the past year makes the upcoming year look promising for electronic health records.
